Extranet
Virtual private networks, or VPNs, bring powerful new benefits to corporate networking applications. VPNs enable organisations to utilise the Internet or secure Fibre Optical Network for private communications.

Nationwide Dedicated Virtual Private Networking
Asergis VPN solution connects multiple offices via dedicated, high bandwidth circuits. High performance is facilitated because traffic between sites connected to the Asergis Fibre Optical Network backbone, does not cross over to the public Internet.
Sites exchange data using encrypted IPSec tunnels, creating a highly secure way to connect multiple offices. The service can connect exclusively to your private network, or coexist adjacent to an existing Internet connection.
Asergis high-speed Fibre Optical Network backbone allows you to utilise VPNs for bandwidth intensive applications.
The justifications for the development of Extranet VPNs are many, and include: -
• Eradication of multiple communication links and the indirect costs associated with their maintenance and upgrade Implementation of technology strategies, such as business-to-business e-Commerce over industry-wide networks.
• Extranets can include single users linking to single organisations (a contractor temporarily gaining access to company resources of relevance to a specific project), or an entire industry linked through a shared network.
The role of IPSec in the Extranet VPN solution is again that of enabler
IPSec gateways permit companies linked to an Extranet to isolate their corporate resources form the shared network. IPSec also ensures the secrecy of information flowing over the Extranet. Thus, if a supplier should work with competing manufacturers, and vice versa, the supplier can transmit sensitive information to an individual manufacturer over the shared network without the other manufacturers gaining access or modifying the information.
When installed on LAN clients, IP Security software establishes "Intranet VPN" connections to either critical application servers or internal VPN gateways. Whether internal or remote access, the VPN client transparently encrypts and authenticates critical data to protect against eavesdropping and malicious data tampering.
IP Security software is installed on any Windows 9x/NT, 2000 PC and supports all IP-based network communications. It interfaces with existing network adapters and TCP/IP network stacks for maximum compatibility. This is because it operates at the IP layer; it can support all IP services without modifications to any applications. Remote users can connect to their corporate gateways via Internet connections and establish secure VPN sessions to access sensitive network resources.
